High School Planning: Selecting Your Level of Study
The Grade Nine Program at OSDSS
Students in Grade Nine select 8 courses - six of which are compulsory and two of which are elective. The six compulsory courses are required; students must study these courses. The two elective courses allow students to pursue their interests. These eight courses are spread out over two semesters in one school year, where students study four courses at a time. For more information about secondary school graduation requirements, please see the Graduation Requirements section of the website under Course Selection. High school students get to choose their pathways. At OSDSS, we strongly urge students and parents to consider their options carefully and consult with their teachers and guidance counsellors before making a final decision. Finding the right fit for you is very important to your success in high school.
De-Streamed/Academic Courses |
Open Courses "O" |
In the 2023-2024 school year, Grade Nine core subjects will be de-streamed in all secondary schools in Ontario. De-streaming means that there will not be a choice of level (i.e. Academic or Applied), but that one program will be offered to all students. The courses that will be de-streamed/academic in the fall of 2023-2024 are Math, Science, English, Geography and French.
